Consultation is open: UOW's AI in Education Blueprint

An invitation to shape the future of education at UOW

Since late 2023, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have arrived with a speed and intensity few anticipated. New possibilities emerged almost overnight. So did uncertainty. Across Australian higher education, early responses were often shaped by urgency, fear and risk.

We are still learning what AI means, what AI makes possible and what AI asks of us—AI is a provocation for higher education. At UOW, we came together in 2026 to explore AI through renAIssance and we now have more evidence, experience and understanding of AI. Importantly, renAIssance was about education:

What should excellent education look like in a world where AI is increasingly present?

That question moved us beyond unhelpful binaries: secure or unsecure, human or AI, allowed or prohibited. The conversation returned our attention to learning, belonging, capability, relationships, judgement and the future we want to create together. We explored educator-trained AI agents using Cogniti, engaged with leading scholars and industry partners, collaborated on a signature UOW learning design model, and mapped assessment from subject to Course Learning Outcomes. We learned a lot together. renAIssance was a yearlong community of inquiry unfolding across UOW that now informs the next three years.

UOW AI in Education (draft) Blueprint 2027–2029:
Students Shaping AI for a Better World

The Blueprint asks us to imagine 2030 with a shared pathway and vision to strengthen UOW's distinctive educational identity. The direction of travel aligns with our UOW Strategic Plan with a focus on shaping AI for a better world.

The Blueprint might surprise some. AI is part of the story, but it is far from being the star. That is because learning is a uniquely relational human endeavour that unfolds through communities.

In the Blueprint, you will find our signature UOW Learning Through Connection Model, our vision for relationship-rich and deeply human education, and a roadmap translating UOW’s 2030 AI Education Goals and Commitments that always come back to relationships.

We invite all UOW students and staff and community partners across UOW’s metropolitan, regional and global campuses to shape our direction for learning, teaching and student success..
